“Being deeply Loved by someone gives you Strength;
Loving someone deeply gives you Courage.”
A few days ago I came across this quote, reading it I was reminded of an incident that occurred a few months back .
It was a fine afternoon, a few clouds were hanging lazily above, cool and gentle breeze was blowing from the mountain side on that sunny day, as the breeze gently caressed my cheeks, a few lines from a poem written by Swami to his Students which I read long ago came as a flash “When on a sultry night everything is hot and still, the first cool breeze brushes your cheeks , I am caressing you think of Me” such a nice feeling it was.
I was on my way home to have lunch when I saw an old gentleman sitting on the bench. He was working in the same office, as a matter of courtesy I asked him how everything was going on, to which no reply was given. I saw him holding his right shoulder; he seemed to be in some sort of pain. So I gently massaged his shoulder, after some time his facial expression returned to normalcy, I realized that he must be fine and stopped.
He was carrying a book which was almost in tatters, i casually asked him as to what he liked most about the book. The old man having experienced life’s ups and downs was happy with the interest I had shown and asked me sit down next to him for a few minutes so that he could share his some wisdom from that book. ( I don’t recollect the name of the book, but he said it was written by his Master/Guru who used to live in the Himalayas somewhere near the Nara Narayan Gufa ashram) .
He began his small talk with the following statement “Does God Love Good Men”. I replied in affirmative for I thought it was so. He said he too had posed this question to his Guru when he had got an opportunity to meet him, to which his Guru went on to narrate a story from the Mahabharata .
His guru counter posed the question back to him as to why Krishna loved Arjuna more than he loved Yudhistira? For which the old man could not reply. Then his guru explained that Though GOD comes as an Avatar on this earth to destroy the evil / bad and establish the Dharma thereby making men follow Good life. God actually loves people who totally surrender to Him. The reason why Krishna loved Arjuna more than anyone else was that He(Arjuna) was ready to obey the command of the Lord without even worrying about the consequences of the actions. Whereas Yudhistira when asked by Krishna to tell a lie w.r.t (Ashwattama Hatha kunjaraha) was first unwilling to follow the command saying that it was (unethical / not fair/ against the rules of the game) but later consented to do so for reasons unknown (which only goes to show that he had placed the virtues above God himself, I think!!! ). Even though Krishna might have appreciated Yudhistira for his goodness but his friendship and love was directed more towards Arjuna .
One more incident from Mahabharata that goes to show how much faith Arjuna had towards Krishna. Once both of them go for an evening stroll along the banks of a river when suddenly Krishna stops Arjuna and tells him that there is crow on top the tree for which Arjuna replies in affirmative. Then Krishna tells him no it is not a crow but an pigeon to which Arjuna replies in affirmative it goes on like this for sometime and Krishna chides Arjuna as to whether he is blind, or was he incapable of not knowing the difference between a crow and a pigeon etc. The reply given by Arjuna was “Lord it is not that I cannot differentiate between a pigeon and a crow, but when you say something I fully believe because, You have the power to change anything at Your will, I place my belief in Your Words rather that in my own senses”. Krishna was so immensely pleased with the answer given by Arjuna. That is why probably He becomes the charioteer of Arjuna during the Kurukshetra war when there were probably more deserving candidates than Arjuna, I thought…….
He went on to narrate one more story from the Mahabharata showing How much Krishna loved Arjuna. The Battle of Kurukshetra turned out to be a nightmare for Arjuna, his stomach churned at the thought of fighting his own blood relatives with whom he had grown, and the elders from whom he had learnt much of the earthly skills and wisdom. Arjuna becomes dejected before the war, Krishna gives him courage and strength through the celestial poem the “Bhagavad Gita”. The incident as narrated by the old man was that Arjuna begins to cry and says “lord I have no problem fighting the war, but what if I die during the course of the war”. Krishna assures Arjuna and says “don’t worry Arjuna in case you were to die in the war then I will myself put you on my lap and enter the fire pyre, be assured of my promise.” I am not sure whether this incident which he narrated is there in any book since I have not come across this story so far but such story only goes on to demonstrate how much Krishna loved Arjuna.
The stories were very touching; The meeting was an eye opener for me. A Tear rolled down my cheek on hearing such wonderful story of the Lord. The relation between the Lord and his Devotees and the love for one another only proves why God still loves His creation in spite of where it is heading to.
Probably what message was trying to be conveyed to me was that being good may not be enough to earn God’s Love but what is more important is that one must develop “Total Faith and Confidence in HIM and his words”.
A few days later:
A few days later I had been to the library to pick up a few books when my eyes fell upon a book with an unusual name “JESUS CEO” I was curious and picked the book without even going through the contents. Later as I was reading the book I came across a paragraph which reads thus “No relationship can survive when one or both parties start treating each other casually and stop troubling themselves on the behalf of others.-(Jesus troubled himself on behalf of GOD). I believe that God yearns to have an intense relationship with each one of us. If we have become people of mediocrity that means that we have stopped troubling ourselves on behalf of God”.
“Thinking” is not my cup of tea I should say, but this particular incident has made to stop and start thinking.
It is not always possible for us humans to have God as a Human Friend like Krishna & Arjuna. It is also not possible for God to have one to one relationship with everyone as He had with Arjuna, so the question is …?
Is God trying to teach man what True Friendship means……….. or
Is that man can attain God’s love by developing such a kind of friendship?
